Hand Cannon

Presented by the NRA National Firearms Museum

This is one of the oldest firearms in the world and likely one of the oldest guns in all of North America. It’s one of the first examples of mating gunpowder with projectiles and this particular piece was excavated at the scene of a castle siege in Tannenburg, Germany around 1350. This firearm was part of a prominent antique arms and armor collection in Europe that was broken up in the 1960s and the hand cannon found its way to the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia — where it can still be seen today — courtesy of the William L. and Colette N. Roberts American Liberty Firearms Collection.
