The “Tommy Gun” became famous for its popularity among gangsters and police in the 1920s and ‘30s. Colonel John T. Thompson began producing these submachine guns — so-called because they fired pistol ammunition — in 1919, and it was the first successful American design of these types of firearms. This particular Colt Model 1921 was donated by George Whitehead, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, and can be seen at the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia.
